This original mix was made exclusively from spices and soon caught on across the country. Then, in the early 1900s, the Indian Tea Association began promoting tea use. Tea quickly surged in popularity, but it was also expensive. In order to cut costs (and as a nod to tradition) vendors started adding milk, sugar and spices as a filler. It was a hit! And so started the country&#x2019;s love of the beverage we now call Masala Chai.</description></oembed>
