Nepal Water Project: Providing Access to Clean Water

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s no secret that we love tea. In fact, tea is the crux of what we do here. It’s also no secret that water is essential to tea—from the moment the Camellia sinensis (tea) seed germinates to the moment it steeps in your cup. So yes, you could say water is pretty important to us, and this is just one of the many reasons we join the celebration of World Water Day 2022.

DAVIDsTEA x Jun Chiyabari Tea Garden

Clean water is a fundamental human right. That’s why access to clean water and water sustainability is a priority for us. During Giving Week 2020, we raised funds for our Nepal Water Project in partnership with Jun Chiyabari Tea Garden, where we source our Organic Nepal Black tea. Together, we are providing clean drinking water to government schools in Nepal. And we’re happy to announce that starting March 22, 2022, 1% of proceeds from Organic Nepal Black will support this project.

The Impact of Our Nepal Water Project

Initially, we hoped that the funds we raised would cover the installation of clean water systems in three Nepalese schools. But then Jun Chiyabari Tea Garden generously decided to match our contributions, so we were able to achieve greater impact! The garden used these funds to build clean water facilities at four schools in the surrounding regions, one of which has two campuses. The project was completed just in time for the start of the 2021-2022 school year, making clean water accessible to over 3,200 people, including children and staff.

About the Water System

The installation of a sediment tank, a Biosand filter, a post filtration collection tank, and a drinking station provides the schools with a chemical-free method of obtaining clean drinking water which requires little to no maintenance. In addition, most of the materials were locally available and the systems are extremely robust to withstand years of use.

These systems were installed by a Nepalese organization that specializes in providing schools with clean drinking water and engaging, youth-friendly educational programs that focus on the importance of water and sanitation practices.

Giving Back to a Community of Tea Lovers

Not only do we love tea, but we also love the way it brings people together. That’s why we are constantly seeking new ways to make a positive impact on our environment as well as the lives of tea farmers, growers, and their families. We’re so pleased to bring projects like these to life. And of course, we couldn’t have done it without you and your passion for tea!

Let’s continue to do good! With every purchase of Organic Nepal Black, you’ll be supporting this ongoing project. This is just the beginning!
